Peabody Energy named Raymond V. Shepherd III vice president of federal government relations to advance Peabody’s public policy and regulatory interests on American energy and environmental matters. Previously, he served as partner and chairman of the Congressional Investigations Practice Group at Venable LLP. He also worked on Capitol Hill for 12 years as an advisor.

Vaughn R. Groves, the executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary of Alpha Natural Resources, has agreed to retire, effective September 1. Richard Verheij will replace Groves. Peter Barton, formerly COO of Yancoal Australia Ltd., has been named principal of energy and mining for Kleinfelder. Syntron Material Handling appointed Andy Blanchard as the new CEO. He has more than 27 years of experience within the manufacturing community.

Bill Sturgill, a prominent figure in the Kentucky coal, horse and tobacco industry, and a former University of Kentucky basketball player under Adolph Rupp, died on July 19 at the age of 89. Born in Lackey on July 31, 1924, Sturgill graduated from UK in 1946. Sturgill formed Kentucky Oak Mining in 1959, building the largest coal auger in the world. He later developed the Golden Oak Mining Co. He served 18 years on the UK board of trustees, was chairman for 10 years, and was instrumental in bringing Rick Pitino to UK. Sturgill also served as a trustee of Pikeville College and was chairman from 1990-1995. He organized and served as president of the Hazard Independent College Foundation in the 1950s, and contributed to setting up the community college system.

Coalspur Mines has reduced the size of its board of directors. Two of the company’s directors, Colin Steyn (the chairman) and Peter Breese, affiliated with Borrowdale Park S.A., resigned. The board now comprises three nonexecutive directors, plus the CEO Gill Winckler. Mark Rodda was appointed chairman. The Audit and the Remuneration and Nominations committees will both comprise all three non-executive directors. The Audit Committee will be chaired by Rodda, and the Remuneration and Nominations Committee will continue to be chaired by Denis Turcotte.

Ray Spurgeon has assumed the role of Eriez product manager-metal detection. Prior to becoming product manager-inspection systems, he was assistant product manager-metal detection.

Longwall Mining Services (LMS), founded by John Whitfield, is now ATB Morley’s sole American-based agent. Whitfield moved to the United States in 1982 while working for Victor Products PLC, and soon progressed to vice president and general manager of the North American operation. In 2010, he established LMS and utilized his vast knowledge of the U.S. mining landscape to provide valued partners with access to the North American mining market. Dirk Hoke took over as CEO of the Large Drives Business Unit of the Siemens Drive Technologies Division. After serving for several years as CEO of Siemens’ Cluster Africa and Siemens Morocco, in 2011 he took over leadership of the Industry Solutions Division before being appointed to head the Siemens Division Customer Services.
