Grant Quasha
Paringa Resources Ltd. appointed U.S.-based banking and coal executive, Grant Quasha, as managing director and CEO. Todd Hannigan will move to deputy chairman. Tom Todd will move to a nonexecutive director role and Taso Arima will step down from his nonexecutive director position. Previously, Quasha was the chief commercial officer of Bowie Resource Partners.

Greg Gillian
Norwest Corp. appointed Greg Gillian as president of U.S. operations. Since joining Norwest in 2005, he has held numerous technical and program management roles in client and partner offices as well as in Norwest’s regional and Canadian offices. He most recently held the position of vice president responsible for performance of Norwest’s Processing and Industrial Minerals business units while managing projects in coal, oil sands, metals and industrial and agri-minerals.

Jean Savage Karl Weiss
CAT announced Doug Hoerr, vice president of the Material Handling and Underground Division (MH&U), has elected to retire from the company. His retirement is effective August 1, after 24 years with the company. Tom Bluth, who was first named a vice president in 2007 and is currently vice president of the Surface Mining & Technology Division (SM&T), will become Caterpillar’s chief technology officer and the vice president of the Innovation & Technology Development Division (ITDD). Jean Savage, who was first named a Caterpillar vice president in 2014 and is currently Caterpillar’s CTO and the vice president of ITDD, will become the vice president of SM&T. In 2013, Karl Weiss was named a Caterpillar vice president for the Earthmoving Division, the position he still holds today. Weiss will become the vice president of MH&U, replacing Hoerr. Caterpillar’s board of directors has appointed Frederic Istas, currently aftermarket solutions global manager for Caterpillar’s Global Aftermarket Solutions Division, to the position of vice president of the Earthmoving Division. Istas joined Caterpillar in 1996 as part of the Europe, Africa & Middle East (EAME) Marketing Division, based in Geneva, Switzerland.

Levi D. Allen
Levi D. Allen was sworn in as the United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) International secretary-treasurer, replacing Robert J. Scaramozzino. He began his coal mining career in 2007 at the McElroy mine (now the Marshall County mine) as a general inside laborer. After working as a beltman, he earned his electrician’s card and began working as a mechanic/electrician throughout the mine. Allen was active in Local Union 1638 from the start, and became the local’s recording secretary in 2010. He was elected to the Mine Committee in 2012 and as local union president in 2014. He was hired on to the international staff in 2015.

Swadhin Saurabh
The 2016 MEI Young Person’s Award was presented to Swadhin Saurabh, who is currently working as a project manager/senior process engineer with Millcreek Engineering Co., based in Salt Lake City, Utah. Swadhin was nominated for the award by professor Jan Miller and Dr. Raj K. Rajamani of the University of Utah. At Millcreek, he works on various mineral processing and material handling systems design, basic and detailed engineering, international business development, proposal preparation, full project execution, and commissioning and startups of projects of various commodities such as precious metals, base metals, coal, and industrial minerals.

Seaport Global Securities LLC announced that Kurt Oehlberg has joined its investment banking department as managing director, mining and metals, and Chad Jennings has signed on as vice president, mining and metals. Oehlberg’s career prior to joining Seaport Global includes more than 30 years of experience with firms including Rothschild Inc., Chase Securities and FBR Capital Markets. Jennings has held positions with Contura Energy, Alpha Natural Resources and FBR Capital Markets.
