The Powhatan No. 6 mine produced more than 4.7 million tons in 2015.
Company spokesperson Gary Broadbent said that Ohio Valley Coal employs 431, including 211 salaried and 220 hourly. “We will transfer as many of these employees as practicable to other operations; however, most of them will be laid off,” he said.
MEC had owned Powhatan No. 6 for about three decades.
