U.S. President Barack Obama has nominated Dr. Suzette Kimball to serve as the director of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Kimball has served as acting director since February 2013 following the departure of Marcia McNutt. Prior to working with the USGS, she served at the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and the National Park Service. She has been with USGS since 1998, most recently serving as deputy director.
David Brown has been appointed CEO of Coal of Africa Ltd. (CoAL). He was appointed as non-executive chairman of CoAL during August 2012, and subsequently appointed as acting CEO during June, 2013.
Kolmar, the Russian coal mining and processing company with assets located in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), appointed Sergey Tsivilev as CEO.
Donna Schmidt has joined Mining Media International as a field editor for Coal Age. She is based in southeast Ohio near Wheeling, W.Va., and will be writing articles monthly, primarily covering the Appalachian region.
Richard Neil Farmer, who served as general counsel of United Coal at the time Massey Energy acquired it in the late 1990s, passed away on January 5 in Hurricane, W.Va.
John Sabo, a retired mining engineer, who worked for Weir International Mining Consultants, passed away on January 6.
Bud Runyon, former vice president of sales for International Coal Group, passed away January 9.

Baldor Electric Co. promoted Jeff Moore to vice president of the Baldor-Dodge brand mechanical product marketing group. Bob Nemecek has been named vice president of Baldor-Dodge mechanical sales for North America. Mike Shea has been named director of U.S. Mechanical Sales and will be responsible for sales and business development in the United States.
