Massey Energy announced that Chairman and CEO Don Blankenship will retire from the company effective December 31, 2010. He has led Massey Energy as chairman and CEO since 2000, and has been with the company since 1982. Baxter F. Phillips Jr., president of Massey Energy, will succeed Blankenship as CEO. Phillips has been with Massey Energy since 1981. Admiral Bobby Inman, lead independent director on the Massey board, will succeed Blankenship as non-executive chairman.
Peabody Energy has appointed Arshad Sayed president-Peabody Mongolia and India.
American Electric Power has appointed Nicholas K. Akins president. He succeeds Michael G. Morris. Morris will continue as chairman of the board and CEO. The company has also appointed Mark C. McCullough executive vice president of generation.
Patriot Coal Corp. announced that Irl F. Engelhardt’s role as executive adviser will end as planned on December 31. Engelhardt will continue in his role as chairman of the board of directors.
Roe-Hoan Yoon has been named a University Distinguished Professor by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors. The Nicholas T. Camicia Professorship of Mining and Minerals Engineering, Yoon is being honored “for the significant contributions he has made to the science and technology of mineral processing,” according to the university. His research funding has generated more than $40 million for the university. He has helped shepherd more than 30 doctoral students and 25 master’s students to their respective degrees. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has been honored multiple times by the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. He holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Seoul National University, and master’s degree and doctorate in metallurgical engineering from McGill University in Quebec, Canada.
