Bowen Coking Coal Ltd. reported Australia’s Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water has advised the company that they intend to provide approval for the Isaac River mine, which will enable a mining lease to be granted upon finalization of land access agreements.
Once operational, Isaac River will produce high-quality, high-yielding metallurgical coal. Bowen Coking Coal’s operations now employ more than 700 in Queensland. Since June 2022, Bowen has mined more than 1.3 million metric tons (mt) of run of mine (RoM) coal from two new mines, and the company has a third pit underway. With the imminent approval of Isaac River mine, the company appears to be in a good position to meet its vision of an annual production target of 5 million mt RoM by 2024.
“As the Bowen Basin’s newest independent coal producer, we’re here to meet the growing demand for energy and steelmaking coal,” Nick Jorss, Bowen’s executive chairman said. “We are confident that world steel and energy demand will continue its rapid growth.”
