Tata Steel is ramping up purchases of Australian and North American coal after halting imports from Russia, according to Nikkei Asia. The Indian steelmaker said it usually imports 3 million mt/y from Russia, which accounted for around 17% of its imports. The move highlights how Russia-Ukraine conflict has affected coal markets.

Tata Steel produces 20 million mt of steel from its Indian operations. The company also produces about 7 million mt of steel from its mills in the Netherlands and another 3 million mt from its mills in the U.K. By 2030, Tata Steel hopes to double its Indian capacity to 40 million mt/y.
