AAP reported that Whitehaven Coal has received federal approval for the expansion of its Tarrawonga mine in New South Wales. Whitehaven plans to increase production at its Tarrawonga mine in the Gunnedah basin from 2 million metric tons (mt) of coal a year to 3 million mt. The company expects to sell 9 million mt from its mines in 2013. Whitehaven owns a 70% stake in Tarrawonga, with the remainder owned by Japanese firm Idemitsu, which controls the Boggabri mine.
