Government officials said the message was delivered during a budget review meeting on November 27 in Kolkata; the meeting was chaired by Jaiswal and was attended by S. Narsing Rao, CIL’s CMD, and other officials of the PSU and its subsidiaries. CIL produced 35 million mt of coal in October, missing its 41-million-mt target by 15%. The company further missed its offtake target of 42 million mt for the month; officials registered an actual offtake, meanwhile, of 36 million mt.
CIL suffered October losses owing to Cyclone Phailin, which impacted key coal producing in the states of Odisha, Jharkhand and West Bengal. Jaiswal said that despite the cyclone-related setbacks, the major remains “hopeful that it will achieve its production target for the current fiscal.”
