According to Reuters, the southern African nation had suspended new licenses in June, pending finalization of a new strategy for the coal sector. The country is looking to diversify away from diamond mining, which generates half of Botswana’s revenue and a third of gross domestic product. Botswana’s has an estimated 212 billion metric tons of coal reserves.
