The 67-worker operation in Gillette, which also celebrated one year with no first-aid injuries this past May, accepted the honor during the recently held annual Wyoming Safety & Workforce Summit in Cheyenne.
The mine was nominated by the Wyoming state mine inspector.
Mine Manager Marc Ostrem represented the crews in receiving the honor and credited their commendable safety record to a culture of training, daily reminders and employees who look out for one another.
“We take great pride in our safety record and consider zero incidents the only acceptable outcome,” he said. “We clearly understand that safety isn’t about statistics, but about individual lives and the co-workers, friends and family we work safely for each day. With that in mind, keeping detailed records and celebrating milestones contributes to our success, and we’re proud of our accomplishments.”
Wyodak, with a 48-year production lifespan contained within its 208 million tons of reserves, is the oldest operating surface coal mine in the United States.
