The furloughs were effective February 1 and include 49 at the Kingston No. 1 mine, 40 at the Kingston No. 2 operation and four at the Kingston preparation plant, all in Scarbro. The underground mines have reduced operations by one section each.

Alpha has cited oversupply and dramatically reduced demand for the decision; in fact, both Kingston No. 1 and No. 2 have seen their demand cut by as much as half.

Last week, the Virginia-based miner issued Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act letters to 886 workers at eight mines and two preparation facilities. Those layoffs will be finalized on March 25.
