Despite a slowing China, CEO Oleg Korzhov said Mechel remains well-equipped to satisfy a “burgeoning” Asia. “Our advantages lie in our deposits’ close proximity to Asia Pacific, logistics and low mining costs;” in Q1 and Q2 2013, Mechel shipped 3.8 million tons to customers in the region, which represents 75% of total coal exports.
The launch of a specialized transshipment complex at Port Posiet into preliminary operation, according to Mechel representatives, was a main driver of the increase. Seaborne Asia Pacific shipments generally transit via Posiet in Primorye, part of Mechel, and Port Vanino in the Khabarovsk region, where transshipment equipment is being upgraded.
