Alpha spokesperson Steve Hawkins said that Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) notices were issued to 114 Sidney Coal workers and three Maxxim Shared Services personnel on September 8. The company expects the operation to close on November 7, or within two weeks of that date.

The company cited a depressed coal market for the move. Alpha has not indicated if the closure will be temporary or permanent.

Process Energy, Alpha’s last active operation in Kentucky, produced about 366,000 tons of steam coal during the first half of this year. The mine’s total tonnage in 2015 was 715,000 tons.
