Adani Mining in Australia is part of the Indian Adani conglomerate, and the Carmichael project represents a part of the Adani Group’s large project to bring the energy supply chain of mine, railway, ports, shipping and electricity production in India together in one conglomerate. According to Adani, the reliability of Komatsu’s mining equipment and its product support capabilities lead to the award.

This announcement follows the news that Suncor, a Canadian oil sands miner, signed a five-year agreement to purchase 175 haul trucks from Komatsu.

Both of these mining operations were interested in the autonomous haulage system Komatsu has pioneered. The company’s FrontRunner autonomous trucks recently surpassed a milestone of 330 million metric tons (mt) of material moved. The FrontRunner trucks run completely autonomously — they are not remotely controlled — with a full truck fleet able to be monitored by single controller located up to thousands of miles away. The trucks operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week, delivering significant safety, productivity, reliability, performance and operational benefits to mine fleet owners.
