Xstrata Coal said that it is hoping a proposed coal export terminal in central Queensland will get significant project status from the state government. It added that the ideal location for the project is Balaclava Island off Port Alma between Rockhampton and Gladstone. The proposal includes developing land and port infrastructure to ship the coal from central Queensland resources to Asia. According to ABC News, initial documentation has been submitted to the federal and state governments. It is yet to be declared a significant project by Queensland’s coordinator general, although the company is hoping that will be granted. Xstrata Coal said that it has already engaged independent experts to start work on an environmental impact statement.
