The firm is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chinese resource giant Ordos group. Only licensed firms can transport coal between Mongolia and China. About 30 local firms control this business, and new licenses are believed to be difficult to get. The Ordos unit is among the roughly five such companies that have their own processing facilities, and the firm also has an export license. Sojitz plans to initially deliver Mongolian coal to Chinese steelmakers and firms that sell coal as fuel, hoping to begin exports to Japanese steelmakers and others within several years. It may also join hands with the Ordos group to develop coal resources in Mongolia in the future.
