Between 2013 and 2019, 3,581 mw of capacity generated at 11 coal units is slated for retirement in Canada. The Canadian government has issued an emissions rule on new and existing coal-fired plants that will come into effect July 1, 2015. Coal-fired generation brought online after July 1, 2015, and units older than 50 years will be limited to emitting no more than 420 metric tons of carbon dioxide per gigawatt-hour. Emissions that are captured by using carbon capture and sequestration, or CCS, are exempt.
