More than half of India’s power generation is coal fired and its share is growing despite a domestic shortage of fuel. Prakash Duvvuri, OreTeam research head, said that “as a result, imports continue to increase, jumping to 15.6 million metric tons (mt) in May, the biggest for the month in at least three years.”
India’s coal imports stood at 13.9 million mt in May 2013 and 15.2 million mt in April 2014.
