Zimbabwe coal production plunged by 38.2% in the first four months of 2019 compared to the same period last year, as coal miners grappled with foreign currency shortages, according to the Mines and Mining Development Ministry. Between January and April, the four coal mining firms produced a total of 531,000 metric tons (mt) compared to 859,300 mt in the same period the previous year. The two biggest miners, Hwange Colliery Co. Ltd. (HCCL) and Makomo Resources, took heavy hits.
