The event, which is being hosted by Workplace Safety North and Ontario Mine Rescue, is also the first international contest to be held in North America since 2008.

An underground scenario, firefighting cases, first aid and other tests are being developed for the competition, which is expected to attract about 30 teams from 20 nations worldwide.

Vale’s Copper Cliff complex, specifically the 114 orebody, will serve as the venue for the underground emergency situation.

Twenty-one teams representing 13 nations competed at the ninth IMRC in Katowice, Poland, in 2014.
