Murray Energy spokesman Gary Broadbent did not indicate how many individuals would be impacted by the stoppage, or how long it could last.

He did confirm, however, that the idle was effective March 31.

“This idling is due to shipment shortfalls by the railroads that serve the mine,” he said. “It is Monongalia County’s intent to continue coal shipments during this outage, with full operations when coal inventory levels allow.”

The 4.5-million-ton-per-year mine was previously known as the Blacksville operation. Murray Energy purchased it and several other mines, along with various assets, from CONSOL Energy in 2013 and quickly changed the names of the mining complexes to match their respective locations.
