The plan outlines that two units at the Clay Boswell facility in Cohasset will idle by 2022, two years earlier than it had previously proposed, and the Taconite Harbor complex near Schroeder will cease coal burning by 2020.

MP is already working toward a greater investment in other fuel types including natural gas, wind and solar, but said regulators pushed for changes to begin sooner, according to the Associated Press.

Long term, the utility’s goal is to move from 75% coal generation currently to about one-third as part of its EnergyForward plan. A decade ago, its coal-fired total was 95%.
