One woman died and a volunteer fire fighter was swept into the treacherous water during one rescue mission. The Raleigh County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) contacted the Mine Health and Safety Academy in nearby Beaver. Twenty-one members of the West Virginia Air National Guard members deployed to assist in flood remediation and local search and rescue efforts needed temporary housing. The Academy, which has a long-standing working relationship with the EOC and the National Guard, didn’t hesitate to make room for them in the dormitory for the duration of emergency operations. The Academy also stored heavy equipment used during recovery efforts.
