Company spokesman Bill Steer told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the move was made due to reduced coal demand. The cuts were made at the XMV, Concept and Extra Energy mines, all in McDowell County.
The mines are controlled by ArcelorMittal USA and produce coking and PCI product. According to its website, all production is consumed by ArcelorMittal facilities.
