Executive Chairman Keith Alessi has reassumed the role of CEO of Westmoreland Coal Co. amid leadership changes pending its acquisition of Sherritt International’s Canadian assets. Alessi held the role for five years leading up to 2013. Richard Klingaman, meanwhile, reassumed his board chairman title. Klingaman was also chairman from 2009 to 2013, and has served as lead independent director since Q2 2013. Robert King has become president of U.S. operations. Alessi will become interim president for Canadian operations, too, directly overseeing the Canadian business transition.

CONSOL Energy announced that Chairman and CEO Brett Harvey will become executive chairman of the company, and President Nicholas J. DeIuliis will become president and CEO. DeIuliis also was nominated for election to the board of directors during its annual shareholders’ meeting. Harvey has served as CEO since January 1998. DeIuliis has served as president of CONSOL Energy since February 2011.

John A. Ziegler, Jr. has been elected chief commercial officer of Arch Coal. Ziegler will be responsible for leading all of Arch’s sales and marketing efforts, including contract administration and transportation logistics. Allen R. Kelley will succeed Ziegler as vice president of human resources.

Bowie Resource Partners hired Manie H. Dreyer, former president of BHP Billiton Energy Coal, South Africa, as its new CEO. Dreyer had served as head of BHP’s Johannesburg-based coal operations since 2009.

CanAm Coal Corp. has appointed Thomas Lewis as a new director to its board. Lewis is currently the vice president and treasurer of company subsidiaries Birmingham Coal and Coke and Cahaba Contracting and Reclamation.

Sean K. McLanahan has been named CEO of McLanahan Corp. Michael W. McLanahan continues as chairman of the board, while George L. Sidney, Jr., remains president and COO. Together, these three serve as McLanahan’s executive team. Jay Nartatez has been promoted to executive vice president, corporate shared services, and will also serve as CFO. Ken Kirsch has been promoted to executive vice president, business operations. McLanahan is currently recruiting for the executive vice president of sales and business development.

Jeffrey D. Addison has joined Weir International as senior vice president. J. Thomas Dilley has joined Weir as vice president.

Dr. Peter J. Bethell, principal mineral processing consultant with Cardno MM&A, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). Academy membership honors those who have made outstanding contributions to “engineering research, practice or education.” In his more than 30-year career, Dr. Bethell is recognized internationally for his expertise with the separation and dewatering of mineral fines. He is a leader in the field of froth flotation and fine gravity separation.

Wayne Chmiel was named vice president of loading and hauling at Sandvik. He was most recently product line manager of electric rope shovels at Caterpillar.

Motion Industries promoted Richard Burmester to senior vice president and group executive for the realigned southwest sales group. Burmester most recently served the company as division manager for the Nashville division. Austin Amos has been named senior vice president and group executive of the newly formed Midwest sales group. Most recently, he served the St. Louis division as division manager, since 2011.

Former West Virginia Office of Miners’ Health, Safety and Training Director Stephen Webber passed away Monday, March 24, in Morgantown, W. Va., at age 72. He was born February 12, 1942. While retired from the coal community, he worked in the underground coal mine industry for many years and served as an assistant safety director for the United Mine Workers of America International Union. He also was the director of the Office of Assessment for the Mine Health and Safety Administration during his career.
