Patriot Coal Corp. announced Gerald R. Swanson Jr. has been promoted to vice president of engineering.


Great Plains Energy announced Bill Downey will step down as president and COO. He will become executive vice chairman during his transition to his retirement. The company has appointed Terry Bassham, current executive vice president of utility operations, to succeed Downey.

The University of Utah announced Thomas A. Hethmon has been chosen as the Western Mining Presidential Endowed Chair in Mine Safety. Hethmon is the first to occupy the chair, and was chosen because of his education, experience in safety and industrial hygiene, teaching and research history, and industry leadership. He will join the faculty of the University’s Mining Engineering Department, in the College of Mines and Earth Sciences.


Paul S. Barbery, of Bluefield, Va., who earned his bachelor’s degree in mining and minerals engineering from Virginia Tech in 1959, is a 2011 inductee into Virginia Tech’s College of Engineering Academy of Engineering Excellence, joining an elite group of 105 individuals out of more than 55,000 living engineering alumni.
