The only annual tradeshow dedicated to coal beneficiation offers a high level of quality continuing education

Last year, Coal Prep celebrated its 30th anniversary. While it’s difficult to keep an event with such a rich history fresh, the organizers strive each year to pull together a well-rounded educational program and 2014 is no exception. Working with the Coal Prep Society of America (CPSA), Penton has developed a technical program that spans much of the coal processing business.
In addition to the technical program, Coal Prep also has one of the best annual expositions in the coal business. Penton expects about 280 companies to showcase coal processing equipment and services. While that total number is about the same as last year, a little more than 10% of the companies will be new to Coal Prep this year. The numbers of international companies exhibiting at Coal Prep also continues to grow, with vendors from Australia, China, Germany, India, Israel, South Africa and the U.K. Last year, international attendance increased 17%, according to Penton, and that has had a positive impact for this year.
To improve attendance figures, Penton instituted a new “qualified attendee” registration program this year. Exhibit-only passes are an inexpensive way for anyone curious about the business to walk the floor and see the equipment. Many of those registrants are not necessarily the professionals that buy and specify equipment, which is who the exhibitors are trying to meet. This year, the qualified attendees will still be allowed to visit the exhibit for a nominal fee, while the non-qualified crowd will pay a slightly higher price.
Coal Prep begins on Monday, April 28, with the very popular Intro to Coal Prep Workshop; it’s one of five workshops scheduled for the week. Similar to last year, Penton is again partnering with the Kentucky Coal Association, which has its own program kicking off on Monday as well. On Tuesday morning, the show officially opens with a keynote session. Over the course of the following three days, more than 16 coal processing professionals will deliver presentations in four technical sessions. In addition to the standard sessions and workshops, Penton is also offering a general session that combines information from Alpha Natural Resources’ Running Right program with the American Coalition for Clean Coal Energy, which lobbies for continued strong coal use. The National Weighing & Sampling Association will also be on hand Tuesday to discuss their standard and practices.
Coal Prep also has a social aspect that allows peer-to-peer networking. There are a number of lunches and receptions scheduled to accommodate those needs. The CPSA offers professional development hours to the professional engineers attending the general sessions. Penton is raffling a motorcycle to create some extra enthusiasm for the exhibit area. Coal Age spoke with a number of its advertisers and what follows is a synopsis of what an attendee can expect to see from the leading vendors. That is followed by the Coal Prep Exhibition in print, which offers a brief description of every exhibitor (as of press time).
The Must-see Vendors
With six subsidiaries that service the coal preparation sector, Elgin Equipment Group (Booth 423) will have a wide variety of products and services on display. Centrifugal & Mechanical Industries offers both vertical and horizontal screen-scroll and vibratory centrifuges. Centrifugal Services manufactures reconditioned centrifuge assemblies and rotary breakers. Coal Centrifuge Services provides after-market service and inspection for centrifuges. Tabor Machine manufactures screening machines, feeders, dewatering and sizing equipment for the coal industry. Norris Screen & Manufacturing builds high-quality screens. The Clinch River Corp. is a full-service fabrication shop specializing in custom equipment for prep plants.
Introducing its news HD-1500 (CEMA D+) and SDX-2200 (CEMA E+) conveyor idlers, Joy Global (Booth 1311) will demonstrate its ability to engineer conveying, crushing and loading applications for coal processing and preparation. Product experts will be available to discuss conveyor components and systems, including idlers and high-angle conveyors, as well as feeder breakers, reclaim feeders and loading equipment for coal applications.
McLanahan Corp. will have two booths featuring dry and wet processing equipment. Inside at Booth 619, McLanahan will display its DDC-Sizer, along with an array of wear parts and 3-D models to represent the company’s line of equipment. The outdoor location (Booth 4016) will include a pilot press version of McLanahan’s line of filter presses. Over the past year, the filter press line has undergone extensive design changes to enhance its safety and simplicity to continue helping customers eliminate tailings ponds, including moving to a single piston design.
The inventor of the sizer, MMD Mineral Sizing America (Booth 605) will exhibit a seven-tooth segmented shaft sizer. It incorporates the newly designed and patented hydraulic side combs, which allow the unit to be fully adjusted in 20 minutes, according to MMD. MMD Sizers are low in profile, create minimal fines and have a very low power cost per ton. They are available in primary, secondary and tertiary models, ranging in capacities from 100 tons per hour (tph) to more than 10,000 tph.
Polydeck (Booth 1212) will introduce its Vector Slot Technology (VST) screen panel. Designed specifically to optimize coal drain-and-rinse applications, the VST screen panel revolutionizes heavy-media recovery, the company said. The VST’s unique design with slots at 45° angles creates vectors in the Z axis of a vibrating screen. This, along with ridges molded into the surface, reduces racing, the tendency of particles or slurry streams to ride or race unhindered across the top of the screen panel. The technology enables a customer to recover heavy media at a higher efficiency than traditional slotted screen panels, and the VST has a much lower tendency to plug with near sized particles providing higher effective open area throughout the life cycle of the screen panel.
The VST panel is currently available in 0.65-mm and 1-mm slotted openings with a 0.85-mm version coming soon.
PrepTech (Booth 905) will display Multotec’s heavy-media and classifying cyclones and spirals. Flame resistant polyurethane is a key feature of the Multotec spirals. The spirals can be coupled with high-frequency dewatering screens from SizeTec. These are proven on spiral refuse and a model with an integrated sieve bend will deslime and dewater clean coal, PrepTech said. TH Minerals plate and frame filter press, with more than 150 coal installations worldwide, will also be represented at the booth. PrepTech also represents TEMA ISENMANN in Pennsylvania, Ohio and northern West Virginia. With the company’s cast polyurethane panels, magnetic liners, and the new TeePee panels with increased open area, PrepTech is offering prep plant managers ways to improve operational efficiency and wear life.
Strata Worldwide (Booth 2116) will showcase several products, including the HazardAvert proximity detection system, the new StrataConnect, atmospheric monitoring, and the Milliken Concrete Cloth. StrataConnect is a multifunctional wireless data network that provides versatile options in day-to-day and post-accident mine monitoring, tracking and communications for underground operations. For mining areas where voice is not necessary, the low-cost, Strata CommTrac network can be installed to facilitate immediate text communications and tracking. It can also integrate with Trolex Sentro 1 gas detectors for continuous environmental monitoring. The Concrete Cloth is a flexible, cement-saturated fabric that hardens when hydrated to form a thin, durable concrete layer that is fire- and water-resistant.
TerraSource Global (Booth 311) specializes in bulk material handling equipment and crushing machinery and is comprised of three brands: Gundlach Crusher, Jeffrey Rader and Pennsylvania Crusher. Gunlach Crushers will display its medium-duty 3000D Series two-stage, four-roll crusher to typically reduce 1,000 tph of 18-in. top size coal to 2-in. product. Jeffrey Rader will display its NF Electromechanical Vibrating Feeder, which typically feeds 4 in. x 0 at a capacity of 350-450 tph. Available in other sizes, the NF capacities range from 240 to 1,800 stph. Pennsylvania Crusher will display their smallest size 26- x 20-in. model TKK “GT” KOAL-KING Granulator.
Weir Minerals (Booth 305) will highlight a portion of their brands, equipment, spare parts and services. On display will be a Cavex 500 CVXT ceramic tile-lined hydrocyclone, the Warman XU slurry pump, Linatex screen media, Linatex transition hose, and Isogate slurry valves. Weir Minerals produces the end-product, but also makes the critical parts for the products and they manufacture the materials the parts are made from. The company invests heavily in material advancements to produce state-of-the-art wear resistant materials for longer life cycles in harsh environments.
