The Gevra mine, which is operated by Coal India Ltd.’s Southeastern Coalfields Ltd. (SECL), recently received environmental approval to expand its production capacity to 70 million metric tons per year (mt/y) from 52.5 million mt/y today, according to the India Times. SECL said the approval highlights Gevra’s significance as one of its major projects that is meeting national energy needs. Not only one of the largest, Gevra is also one of the longest operating mines with more than 40 years of experience.
