Jewett, the second largest operation in the state, marked the occasion with its employees on July 30 with a barbecue lunch, mine equipment display, mine tours and activities for workers’ families. About 500 were in attendance, including employees and families, TWCC and NRG Texas Power corporate representatives, state and local government officials, contractors and vendors.

A surface lignite mine in Leon, Freestone and Limestone counties between Dallas and Houston, Jewett employs about 450. The operation has been in production since 1985, produces between 4 and 7 million tons annually, or about 15% of the state’s total yearly tonnage.

Jewett supplies its coal to the nearby Limestone Electric Generating Station under a long-term contract.
