The Bull Mountains mine, located near Roundup, produced 2.4 million tons of bituminous coal in the second quarter, beating its 2-million-ton output a year earlier. For the first six months of 2013, Signal Peak produced nearly 4.3 million tons, well on its way to eclipsing its 2012 total of 5.7 million tons.

Part of the reason for this year’s successful production ramp-up is that Signal Peak Energy LLC, the mine’s operator, has avoided any longwall panel moves in 2013, according to company spokesman Michael Dawson. The mine is scheduled for a longwall panel move in the first quarter of 2014, however, he said.

Dawson said company officials were pleased with the mine’s performance during the first half of this year and looked forward to continued success in the remaining months of 2013.
