The city-owned electric utility in Owensboro, Kentucky, is starting to wind down its coal supply agreements in anticipation of the planned closing of its 425-megawatt Elmer Smith coal-burning generating station in less than two years.

Owensboro Municipal Utilities, which has operated the Smith plant for more than half a century along the Ohio River just east of the Daviess County city, is unlikely to purchase new coal supplies once its existing contracts run out over the next year or so, according to James Roberts, OMU fuels and byproducts manager.
