The mine in Belmont and Monroe counties, which extracts from the Pittsburgh No. 8 seam, was previously scheduled to close in July.

Company spokesperson Gary Broadbent said Ohio Valley Coal employs 431, including 211 salaried and 220 hourly.

“We will transfer as many of these employees as practicable to other operations; however, most of them will be laid off,” he said.

MEC had owned Powhatan No. 6 for about three decades.
