The first stage includes revamping cargo turnover provisions up to 7 million metric tons per year (mtpy). The upgrade allows the port to load 28,000 mtpd of coal. The equipment was provided by ThyssenKrupp AG, which is overseeing start-up and commissioning.
The complex’s chief characteristics, along with storage equipment, are tipping machines, which speed unloading, while minimizing potential wagon damage. Production also includes magnets eliminating contamination during transport by removing potential impurities.
To unload coal in harsh winter conditions, the terminal employs a defreezing facility with infrared electric heaters. The export terminal is also operated remotely from a single monitoring center while featuring dust-control systems creating a water veil for environmental protection.
The second stage includes construction of a deep-water berth and bottom dredging of the approach channel for Panamax-type vessels of up to 60,000-mt cargo capacity. Primorye borders China and North Korea and faces the Sea of Japan.
