While the mine now has two locally manufactured units underground as required, the retrofitting needed to make the chambers compliant will not be complete by the June 30 deadline.
“[The] D-5 mine will be forced to temporarily shut down until the changes can be made,” the notice said. “A shutdown…will necessarily reduce operations at the Harlan-Cumberland’s Highsplint preparation plant.”
Harlan-Cumberland officials are currently seeking an extension that will allow it sufficient time to finish the retrofits.
