Westmoreland accepted an award from the parks and wildlife department for best conservation practices of ecosystems. It recognized Westmoreland in revisions to the agency’s Quail and Grassland Bird Land Use reclamation guidelines. The prize further acknowledged Westmoreland as an industry leader in upland game bird reclamation.
The Railroad Commission of Texas–Surface Mining and Reclamation Division, meanwhile, gave Westmoreland accolades via its 2013 award for Advanced Reforestation Practices, citing the company’s establishment of species habitats. Westmoreland received a further state Environmental Excellence Award in the Innovative Operations/Management category for land restoration.
