The Dugout Canyon mine received 2013’s RMCMI Safety Award among small underground mines for a perfect safety record. Dugout employees worked 239,763 hours with a zero incident rate, compared with a national underground average of 5.05 incidents per 200,000 employee-hours. This is the second consecutive year Dugout Canyon earned this award.

The SUFCO mine similarly received the RMCMI 2013 Safety Award among large underground mines for a perfect safety record. In 2012, SUFCO miners worked 593,557 hours without incident, contrasting a national average of 5.05 incidents per 200,000 employee-hours.

To qualify for the eight-state award, mines must have produced substantial coal volumes without a reportable safety incident during 2012. Mines were then compared via incident rate data as reported to Mine Safety and Health Administration for the calendar year.
