“Achieving the 1-billion-ton milestone is a testament to the hard work and strong focus on safe and responsible production by Cordero Rojo mine’s employees,” said Colin Marshall, president and CEO, CPE. “Cordero Rojo will continue to play an important role in U.S. coal production well into the future.”

“I want to congratulate all of our employees on reaching this significant mark,” said Joe Vaccari, Cordero Rojo mine general manager. “Hitting 1 billion tons of coal shipped is quite an accomplishment for the Cordero Rojo mine. We are proud to help America meet its energy needs for safe, reliable and affordable electricity.”

Started in 1976 by Sun Oil Co., the Cordero mine shipped just more than 10,000 tons in its first year of operation. The Cordero mine merged with the Caballo Rojo mine in 1997 to create the Cordero Rojo mine. Since merging the two mines, the complex has historically produced more than 35 million tons annually.
