Two coal-burning power plants in Kentucky, of similar size and age, face vastly different futures — Henderson Municipal Power & Light’s (HMP&L) 312-megawatt (MW) Station Two plant will likely close by May 31, 2019, while East Kentucky Power Cooperative’s 341-MW Cooper station is expected to operate for many years. In the case of Station Two, built in the early 1970s near Robards in Henderson County, the city-owned municipal utility is looking at having to spend about $50 million on improvements over the next five years to keep the plant open.
