The A$381 million United Wambo Coal Project in Australia’s Hunter Valley has been approved to extract an additional 150 million metric tons over a 23-year period by the New South Wales Independent Planning Commission (IPC), according to ABC.
The IPC, however, placed an unprecedented set of conditions for exports, saying the coal can only be exported to countries that have ratified the Paris climate accord or have policies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The United Wambo project will combine the pits of Peabody Energy’s Wambo mine with United’s mine, which has been under care and maintenance since 2010. The companies behind the joint venture, Glencore and Peabody, said they were reviewing the details of the approval.
