Mountaineer Guardian Safety Awards are presented each year to mining operations that have demonstrated a commitment to operational safety. In other news, Patriot Coal received four distinguished reclamation awards.
- Guyan Surface Mine—received both the Society of American Foresters Woodlands Award and the Appalachian Regional Reforestation Initiative State Reforestation Award recognizing the mine’s reforestation of native species of trees and wildlife
- Logan County Preparation Plant—was awarded the West Virginia Coal Association’s Exemplary Reclamation of Refuse Facilities Award for the reduction of environmental impacts
- Campbell’s Creek Complex—received the Underground Coal Mine South Award for exceptional reclamation of surface areas of the Campbell’s Creek No. 3 underground mine, presented by the West Virginia Coal Association and the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection
