The winners for the first-aid competition were Walter Energy Jim Walter Resources Blue Creek Team, first place; second place, Cliffs Natural Resources, Oak Grove Mine Green Team; and third place went to BHP Billiton, San Juan Coal, San Juan Team Silver.

Cliffs Natural Resources’ Pinnacle Mining Blue Team won the overall 2013 mine rescue competition.

In the Bench Biopak 240-S competition, first place went to Ty Odle of Arch Coal’s Mountain Coal Company, West Elk Red Team; second place, Josh Gibson, Patriot Coal, Western Kentucky Team; and third place, Zach Brown, Gibson County Coal, Gibson County Rescue Rhinos Team.

The winners of the Bench Biopak 240-R were Shane Meadows, Vectren Fuels, Black Panther Mining, 5 Star Team, first place; Nick Downey of River View Coal, River View Team, second place; and third place went to Cody Robinson, Gibson County Coal, Gibson County Rescue Rhinos. Team Winners of the Bench BG-4 competition included Scottie Cagle, Walter Energy Inc., Jim Walter Resources North River Mine Team, first place; John Helmick, CONSOL Energy, Bailey Mine White Team, second place; and third place was Scott Maggard, Arch Coal, Cumberland River Coal Blue Team.

The preshift competition winners included Energy West Mining, Energy West Silver Team, Corey Prettyman, first place; Alpha Natural Resources, Coal River Team East, James Thomas, second place; and third place was David Mackey on Kentucky Coal Academy’s MCC Team.

In the combination competition, Walter Energy’s Jim Walter Resources’ Blue Creek Team took first place, led by mine rescue captain Ricky Lewis and first-aid captain Joe Tingle. Second place went to Teco Coal Corp.’s Gray Team with mine rescue captain Rockford Moore and first-aid captain Bennie Akers. Taking third place was Patriot Coal’s Western Kentucky Team, led by mine rescue captain David Self and first-aid captain Chris Duncan.

Overall winners of the mine rescue competition included Cliffs Natural Resources’ Pinnacle Mining Co. Blue Team taking first place, led by Chad Lester. Second place went to Patriot Coal’s Western Kentucky Team led by Self. Patriot Coal’s Federal No.2 Team also took home third place, led by captain John Sabo.
