The Tavan Tolgoi coal deposit, situated in the nation’s south, is one of the world’s largest, boasting estimated reserves of more than 6 billion metric tons (mt). It likely has abundant high-quality coking coal for making steel. Erdenes is developing the eastern section of the deposit and is cranking up output bound for China. The mine is scheduled to go into full production of 15 million mt annually in three to four years, with a portion of this likely to be supplied to Mitsui.
