Peabody Energy named Michael J. Flannigan senior vice president, global government affairs. He succeeds Fredrick D. Palmer, currently senior vice president, government relations, who has been named special advisor to the Office of the Executive Chairman. Most recently, he served as vice president of global government advocacy outreach for Peabody.

Corsa Coal Corp. appointed Peter Merritts as president of the Northern Appalachia Division. Most recently, he was the president of AMFIRE Mining Co.

Arch Coal elected James A. Sabala to its board of directors. Sabala will serve on the board’s audit and finance committees. He currently serves as the senior vice president and CFO of Hecla Mining Co.

Dr. Christopher Bise
Dr. Christopher Bise

Dr. Christopher J. Bise, CT Holland distinguished professor and chairman of the Department of Mining Engineering at West Virginia University (WVU), died unexpectedly while attending the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration conference in Denver, Colorado, in February. Bise was a graduate of Penn State, earning his graduate and doctorate degrees in 1976 and 1980, respectively. Before moving to West Virginia University to serve in their mining program, he was the George H. and Anne B. Deike chair and the mining engineering program chair. In 1996, Bise created and chaired the Industrial Health and Safety program. In 2006, Bise left Penn State as professor emeritus of Mining Engineering and Industrial Health and Safety, to join the WVU program.

CSX elected Oscar Munoz as president. He will also remain COO. It also promoted Mike Pendergrass to vice president-transportation; Jermaine Swafford to vice president regional transportation-southern region; and Cindy Sanborn to executive vice president-operations. Before joining CSX in 2003 as COO, Munoz was CFO and vice president of AT&T Consumer Services. Most recently, Sanborn was vice president and chief transportation officer at CSX; Pendergrass was the vice president of regional transportation for the southern region; and Swafford was division manager in Atlanta.

Aleks Roudnev

The Hydraulic Institute named Aleks Roudnev, manager of research and design-applied hydraulics, Weir Minerals North America, as its 2014 Member of the Year. The award was conferred to Roudnev at the Hydraulic Institute’s 2015 annual meeting held recently in St. Petersburg, Florida. As an active member of HI since 1995, his recent contributions include serving as chair of the HI Standards Committee, the Slurry Pumps Committee, and he serves as vice chair of the HI General Guidelines Committee.
