America Electric Power appointed Nicholas K. Akins CEO. He will retain his position as president, and has been elected to the board of directors. Akins replaces Michael G. Morris who is retiring.

Gerald H. Luttrell, who holds the Massey Professorship in Virginia Tech’s Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering, is the 2012 recipient of the Robert H. Richards Award from the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration. According to the Robert H. Richards award committee, Luttrell was selected in recognition of “the significant global impact of his scientific contributions and engineering excellence for teaching, research, scholarly activity, and professional service in mineral and coal processing.” Established in 1948, the Robert H. Richards Award recognizes achievement in any form that unmistakably furthers the art of mineral beneficiation. Luttrell earned his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. in mining engineering from Virginia Tech. He has completed projects worth more than $14 million, obtained 15 process patents and authored more than 150 scholarly publications in journals and proceedings, as well as more than 180 technical reports. His research has contributed to the development of innovative technologies for coal preparation and mineral processing.

Colombia Clean Power & Fuels has appointed Pete Lilly to the company’s board of directors. Lilly has more than 30 years of senior operations and executive experience with some of the largest coal companies in the United States, including CONSOL Energy, where he served as COO and as president–coal group, and Peabody Holding Co., where he served as president and COO. The company also announced the appointment of Ronald G. Stovash as president and CEO. Stovash has more than 25 years of senior executive experience in the U.S. coal industry. Most recently, he was president and CEO of PinnOak Resources LLC.

AES has appointed Andrew Vesey COO of utilities; Ned Hall COO of generation; and Victoria Harker president of global business services. Harker will continue to serve as CFO.

Huesker has appointed Alex Schloemer to its staff with responsiblity for assisting the mines in the Upper Appalachian and Ohio River regions.
