Schurco Engineers Slurry Pumps for Coal Preparation

Coal prep plants (and other mineral plants) use Schurco slurry pumps as an integral part of the processing network. The Schurco S and Z series are all-purpose workhorse pumps that provide ideal duty points from low flows of 10 gallons per minute (gpm) or 2.3 cubic meters per hour (m3/hr) to capacities as high as 18,000 gpm (more than 4,000 m3/hr). Designed to be able to reach heads greater than 250 ft (76 m) with a single stage, these pumps strike the ideal balance between wear rates and efficiency.

The Schurco S Series slurry pump can handle as much as 18,000 gpm.

“Through our global distribution network we supply critical spares when our customers need them, at costs they can afford,” said Will Pierce, marketing manager, Schurco Slurry Pumps. “Our mission is to bring value to our customers through product availability and the lowest possible total cost of ownership [TCO]. We maintain strict product control in the U.S. Our all-American workforce includes master mechanics and machinists, engineers from diverse backgrounds, and a solid commitment to excellence at every level of the company. Our parts last longer and the pumps run more efficiently. Downtime is minimized with readily available spares stocked locally. Working with Schurco plant operators will see the benefit of reduced TCO.”

The Schurco Slurry S Series and Z Series pumps are ideally suited for coal preparation, Pierce explained. The S Series employs a commonly found pump design in the industry: split-case halves with hardened high-chrome liners and impellers installed in the wet-end. Expeller seals allow these pumps to run with no sealing water in most applications. The Z Series pumps, which have been used historically in dredging and gravel operations, are optimal for heavy media and large coal particle pumping applications. These pumps have thick, oversized solid bowl casings with immense three-vane impellers designed to pass the largest solids possible. “Clogged impellers will be a thing of the past with Schurco Z Series pumps,” Pierce said.

With heavy-duty wear components cast in the hardest chrome irons on the market today or lined with a variety of rubber or other elastomeric materials, the S Series pump achieves its goal in providing long-lasting life with ease of use and maintenance. The S Series pumps are designed for slurries through Class IV with appropriate material selection. Oversized high-strength alloy steel shaft limits deflection during operation. A robust cast-iron base cradles the bearing cartridge and allows simple impeller adjustment and pump wet-end support with minimal number of through bolts. A tapered mating faces enable accurate alignment of liners. A heavy-duty, cast-iron cover and frame plates enclose the wet-end of the pump enabling high operating pressures.

Schurco application engineers can assist in specifying from a wide range of available chrome iron alloys and molded elastomers to optimize the wear characteristics of each component.
