Russian Miners Set New Longwall Records

The Russian Yalevskogo mine, operated by the Siberian Coal Energy Co. (SUEK), recently set a world record for monthly coal production from a single longwall system. The mine produced 1.57 million metric tons (mt) or 1.72 million tons of raw coal during July. The mine, formerly known as Kotinskaya, surpassed its own national record of 1.4 million mt per month (1.54 million tons per month) for May.

Located in the Kemerovo area, the Yalevskogo longwall consists of a Cat face with an Eickhoff SL 900 shearer loader. The conditions are ideal for the 2,500-kilowatt (kW) SL 900, which cuts coal from seams with thicknesses that range from 2.4 meters (m) to 6 m. The combination of highly skilled miners and the powerful yellow SL 900 is a story of constant success, Eickhoff said.

Impact Cradle

The curved design of the Impact Cradle from Superior Industries eliminates the space between the belt and bed, adding extra protection. Designed to fit into an existing idler mounting footprint, it’s built to receive the blunt force of material flow at transition points in conveying systems, lessening the wear on the conveyor belt. Thick urethane segments absorb shock and dissipate contact energy, reducing conveyor belt wear and tear. Fitted for CEMA C, D and E idlers, the Impact Cradle is available in 20° and 35° trough angles for 5-, 6- or 7-inch diameter roll heights.

Flared Multirow Cage Mills

The F-Series, or Flared Series, Cage Mill from Stedman features a flared discharge opening, efficiently reducing the wettest and stickiest of materials, either abrasive or nonabrasive, without clogging. A multirow cage design takes material into the center of the inner-cage where it impacts on the cage impact bars and is hurled by centrifugal force into the path of the counter-rotating outer cage bars. This multistage reduction multiplies the impact force and results in higher first-pass yields. The cage mill is capable of producing a variety of product gradations by changing the mill speed. Feed sizes up to 3.5 inches are typical with capacities from 1 ton to 200 tons per hour (tph). A variety of linings are available for the unit.

Flexible Coupling Basics

Many different types of flexible couplings are available for use in the pump industry. Each has its own features and benefits, but all are required to perform three primary functions: connect two shafts, transmit rotary power and accommodate shaft misalignment. A document recently released by the Hydraulic Institute outlines pumping industry standard practices to select flexible couplings based on application requirements. Along with basic selection techniques, it reviews the most common styles of couplings found on pump applications across different industries today. It also provides the user with general guidance on the installation and maintenance requirements of each coupling type.

6-Gladiator Admittance image.jpg

Smart Level-detection Switch

The Gladiator Admittance Smart Switch Series, a state-of-the-art level probe, has been designed to operate in tough industrial environments. It detects the level of liquids, slurries, powders or solids in a tank or vessel. The unit is suitable for a broad range of products and dielectric constants and can operate at temperatures of up to 842°F. The unit measures the capacitance or “admittance” between a probe and the wall of the container. As the level of the product rises to the level of the probe, or drops below that level, the capacitance measured at the probe changes. The Gladiator detects this change and produces an output.

Flow Switch Protects Pumps

Engineers responsible for industrial water storage, disinfection or effluent treatment systems will find the FlexSwitch FLT93 Flow Switch reduces pump repair and extends pump life by detecting dry running conditions. Industrial wastewater treatment systems in mining applications depend on pumps to move water through storage, disinfection, effluent treatment and delivery. Pumps are expensive to operate and costly to maintain — especially when dry running conditions suddenly occur due to system variable demand, leaks, clogs or other problems that can end up damaging pump seals or bearings. The result can be emergency shutdowns, expensive service interruptions and major pump repairs, overhauls or even full replacement.

Non-nuclear Density Meters

The Red Meters (RM) Series is a product lineup of highly accurate non-nuclear density meters. Coated with an abrasion-resistant liner to withstand rough and finely ground slurries, the RM3 is easily installed into the slurry pipeline. A Class 2 industrial laser reads passing materials continuously, which is then interpreted by the system’s custom-developed algorithm and fed into the Human Monitoring Interface (HMI). Density is calculated with an accuracy of 0.25% based on samples taken 50 times per second. The RM3 is far more than just a sensor. The HMI touchscreen output can be set to display different variables in numerical or graph form, including density, pressure, percent solids, totalized mass, and more. The RM3 is designed to accommodate an internal pipe bore of 2 in. to 60 in. in diameter with a maximum pressure of 600 psi. Replacing a nuclear meter with a RM3 increases accuracy readings by 2.5%, leading to immeasurable savings in time and money.

Hitachi Introduces Multiple Technological Innovations

Last fall, Hitachi showcased several technological advancements at its MINExpo 2016 exhibit. These innovations ranged from autonomous haulage to an advanced AC-drive system to electric-powered hydraulic mining excavators.
“Hitachi built the first hydraulic excavator in Japan exclusively using Japanese technology,” said Craig Lamarque, division manager, Hitachi Construction Machinery-Americas. “Building on this legacy, Hitachi continues to lead the industry with technological innovation.”

Hitachi’s Autonomous Haulage System (AHS) leverages technologies developed for Hitachi Ltd.’s automotive and railroad solutions as well as Wenco’s fleet management and dispatch system to increase productivity and lower the total cost of ownership. The system features automated navigation and route optimization; the ability to negotiate traffic conditions; optimized accelerating, braking and steering control, site awareness and forward collision warning; and the Wenco fleet management system for overall supervisor control.

“As a fully integrated system, our autonomous haulage system is Hitachi to the core,” said Lamarque. “It results in a truck that can determine the most efficient paths without constant communication with traffic control. We’ve also included components that make it possible to convert any Hitachi AC-3 truck bought today to AHS in the future.”
