Itar-Tass reported the investigation into the Raspadskaya coal mine disaster in the Kemerovo Region may be prolonged by another two months. The location of the area where the explosion occurred remains flooded. The coal bed in question is at a depth of about 400 m. Rescue workers suspect it is there they may find the bodies of the 23 coal miners, who are listed as missing. According to Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, the Raspadskaya coal mine will be restored. “According to preliminary estimates, some 10 billion roubles [$323 million] will be needed for its restoration,” Putin said. “The mine can and should be restored.” Two methane explosions killed 67 miners on May 8, 2010.
