Construction at generator AES Gener’s 270 mw coal-fired Campiche plant in Chile’s central region V remains suspended despite the granting of a new environmental license by local regulators.  In June 2009, Chile’s Supreme Court revoked the environmental approval for the US$500 million project because of zoning problems at the site of the plant, stopping works that had already begun, according to BN Americas. “We continue to seek resolution of the permitting issues,” said Paul Hanrahan, CEO, AES. “The government of Chile has now solved the zoning issue. We subsequently reapplied for the environment license which was approved on February 2. While we are encouraged, there are a few issues that need to be resolved before construction can begin.” AES Gener is the second largest power generator in Chile with installed capacity of 2.85 GW from both hydro and thermo plants.
