Forge Group Acquires Taggart Global |

Taggart Global, an engineering firm based in Pittsburgh that specializes in prep plant construction, announced this week that it was acquired by Forge Group, an EPCM firm based in Perth, Australia, for $43 million plus a further $25 million of potential earn-out payments. Founded in 1993, Taggart has some of the world’s leading blue chip resources and utility companies as customers with long-term contracts and relationships spanning many years. The company employs 600 people.

Jewett Mine Nabs Three Environmental Awards |

Westmoreland Coal Co. officials announced that the Jewett mine in Jewett, Texas, has been recognized by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the Railroad Commission of Texas–Surface Mining and Reclamation Division and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for dedication to environmental excellence. Company officials were pleased given the scope of the competition. “It was competing against all industries and businesses in the state, not just other mining companies,” said Westmoreland CEO Robert P. King.

In one of the most significant success stories a beleaguered American coal sector has seen in recent years, Illinois enjoyed a five-fold increase in coal exports between 2010 and 2012, largely to Europe. However, according to a new report, even better news may be on the horizon for the state’s prolific producers planning to ship their high-sulfur steam coal to even more overseas markets.

Workers at Peabody Energy’s Bear Run mine in Indiana and its Kayenta mine in Arizona have both accomplished safety milestones in surpassing more than 1 million operating hours without a reported or lost-time injury, according to company officials. Bear Run’s year-to-date 0.0 incidence rate compares with a 3.17 incidence rate per 200,000 hours worked among U.S. mines, based on recent statistics. The year-to-date 0.47 incidence rate of Navajo County’s Kayenta mine is 85% lower than the U.S. median of 200,000 hours worked.
